The main body is engraved with the Emerson logo and 'Emerson Flutes USA' plus the serial number 032874-6. There is no model number. The headjoint is engraved with the Emerson Logo and 'sterling' indicating solid silver. OT: Deford Flutes. Page 1 of 1 [ 8 posts ]. If so, what's good about the good one's and bad about the less good Deford flutes. Suitcase fusion 3 serial number mac. Also, how might one tell them apart: Serial Number, factory stamp, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I think Deford flutes are the early work of Emerson Deford, also the founder of Emerson flutes.

My daughter (5th grade) started playing flute this year. We went with the rental thing and she received a used Emerson EF1 that she uses currently. Recently, we found a flute that we might be interested in, a Gemeinhardt 50 series 52sp (this is how it was listed so if anything is incorrect, blame my ignorance and feel free to correct me). They claim that the Gemeinhardt is, in their words, 'in very good condition and hard case is in excellent condition'. They are asking $150 for it.
I've been going through the posts here in this sub and it seems that, provided that the flute isn't dinged up, dented, bent, etc., the worst we would be looking at is replacing the pads and possibly adjusting whatever might need adjusting. It seems that the general consensus is that it would run in the neighborhood of $150-$200 to have that stuff done.

Download file test. Now my main question would be, providing that the Gemeinhardt is is good condition and needs only the regular maintenance stuff done, is it better to buy that or stay with the rental?
- But it is a true Emerson piccolo - it just doesn't have a serial number. Most Emerson piccolos go for a lot more than four hundred dollars, I believe. And it still plays very, very well even without the correct pads.
- Yamaha, Emerson, Jupiter, Gemeinhardt, or even a used flute in good condition will work. There are other brands but those are the ones most commonly heard of. I started on a used nickel plated Artley and developed just fine as a player.
Secondly, which is the 'better' flute? Are these two flutes equivalent in how they play? Again, I know nothing about flutes so I wouldn't even know what is important when researching this stuff online.
Finally, the rental, a used flute, would end up costing ~$925 in the end. That seems steep to me. I understand and respect that it is a rental with a payment plan, thus it would be more than outright purchasing it but it looks like a person could purchase one new for ~$725. It seems, from what I saw while doing a bit of research, that a used one would be 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a brand new one which would mean that we would, in the end, be paying ~$450 to $550 for the convenience of payments. If that is normal and reasonable, I'd seriously consider just purchasing a brand new one outright. Is this reasonable? Am I crazy thinking that amount is really high?
